The scheme of payments for bereaved spouses and civil partners changed on 6 April 2017. For the first time, widowed people under 45 without children will receive support. However, the majority of those with children will be worse off, with 91% supported for a shorter time.

The Childhood Bereavement Network has been coordinating a group of organisations campaigning against aspects of the changes, which saw 94% MPs contacted by WAY Widowed and Young members and other worried constituents. A taskforce has developed a film summarising the changes.
